Altar Servers offer service to God and the community by assisting the priest during liturgical celebrations. The server function and role, when conducted with grace and reverence, add significantly to the sacredness of the rituals and help the assembly participate more fully and more prayerfully. Responsibilities include preparation of the altar before Mass, supervised by the Sacristan, cross, candle, and incense bearer, holding the Roman Missal and other ritual books for the clergy, and preparation of the altar during the Presentation and Preparation of the Gifts.
To be eligible to participate in this ministry, altar servers should be baptized Catholics who have received the sacrament of First Communion, are mature enough to understand and carry out responsibilities, regularly attend Sunday Mass, and have a prayerful attitude.
